Johan van Dommele (b. 1927) — Sonatine Psalm 100 (1958) for organ
1) Festivo
2) Semplice
3) Alla rondo
“Sonatine Psalm 100” (1958) is based on Claude Goudimel’s melody for Psalm 100 in the Genevan Psalter (1551). This sturdy, Phrygian mode melody is also used for Psalms 131 and 142. (It is not to be confused with the more well-known “Old 100th” melody, which in the Genevan Psalter is associated with Psalm 134.)
The Dutch musician Johan van Dommele (b. 1927) was organist at St. Eusebius’s Church in Arnhem from 1959 to 1995. He also served on the faculty of the Arnhem Conservatory, first as professor of organ and instructor of music theory, and later as deputy and acting director. He began his career as a church organist at age 10, and pursued an active career concertizing, improvising, teaching, adjudicating, consulting on new organ design, and composing organ music.
