Sérénade Nordique

Édouard Mignan (17 March 1884 - 17 September 1969) was a French organist and composer.

He was born in Orléans and 14 years old he became the organist of église Saint Paterne. He studied organ in Paris with Alexandre Guilmant and Louis Vierne and won the Grand Prix de Rome in 1912. He was organist at Saint-Thomas-d'Aquin from 1917 to 1935. He succeeded Henri Dallier as organist of la Madeleine in 1935 and held that post until 1962.

The piece is an orchestral piece, composed by Mignan, but the organ work is a recent arrangement by German composer and organist, Andreas Willscher.

You probably have heard a number of his works which have been uploaded by Carson.

"Sérénade Nordique" is sweet and captivating, almost hypnotic. It seems to me that the shadow of Gabriel Fauré is nearby throughout this entire piece, but perhaps you will hear it differently.

The rich, pungent color of the Solo Orchestral Oboe seemed an ideal match for much of the solo line, but you also hear the Solo Concert Flute several times.

The central section is a registration that would suit many of the organ works of Franck.
