Composer: Igor Stravinsky (transcription by Charles Braund)
Sample Set: Silver Octopus Concert 125
Software: Hauptwerk V
Genre: Modern
Description:
Stravinsky took a trio sonata for strings as his basis for the first movement in his Pulcinella Suite. It would seem to be by Gallo but is also considered to be Pergolesi. I have transcribed the Gallo version elsewhere on this site.
Very much unlike the average Stravinsky piece, the whole suite consists of some lovely melodic musical movements with really great melodies although there are parts of the suite that are more akin to the composer. Unfortunately, I am not the first to transcribe the piece for organ where the whole suite has been done superbly by Bruno Vlahek in a world premier recording of his own arrangement (available on YouTube).
I based my transcription on the original Gallo, the full score and a solo piano reduction over as many as four staves. - not that easy a task to read and rather difficult to work out. Although Stravinsky remains fairly close to the original Gallo, he does add a considerable amount of extra notes and harmonies obviously as well as adding extra bars here and there which really confuses matters when playing the piece.
The performance posted here shows a certain amount of hesitation in places both in timing and at times, inconsistent trills but I am sure that once I have been playing it regularly for a few months and my confidence grows in performing it, a lot of this will disappear.
