Bach composed this piece for to get the membership of "Mizler's Societät" at Leipzig which an elite-club of science and fine arts at Leipzig.
Bach created here a piece on a very high intellectual level. Additionally he included a short motiv on "Allein in der Höh' sei Ehr'" in the bars 41 (=BACH) and 43 (=CRDEO) of the III. Variation as well as his sinature BACH and HCAB in the bars 39 and 41 of the last variation.
