German composer and organist Bernd Genz (b. 1958) began organ studies at age 12 and took his first organist post at age 17 in Rüsselheim. During his time studying theology (1981–87) in Heidelberg, he also studied theory and composition with Hermann Schäfer. After completing his theological training, Genz trained as a nurse and worked in this profession with the mentally handicapped until his retirement in 2020. In 1995, Genz became organist in the parish of Reinheim (Odenwald). Genz has been an active member of the Christian Heinrich Rinck Society and has conducted research relating to unpublished works from the Erfurt period. The results of his research (and editions of the compositions) have been published by Edition Dohr. As a composer, Genz has published various original organ and choral works.
