I discovered this quirky little piece whilst doing some research on Lemare on YouTube. It seemed simple enough on paper (IMSLP has the score) and whilst Lemare has a reputation for being difficult, this little piece didn't seem to pose too many problems on first sight.
Wrong ! It's really tricky: Firstly, it's "out of kilter" and throws you out of time very easily and secondly - typical of Lemare - there are a lot of finger twisted finger substitutions required to keep things legato in the middle section.
I'm still a little lacking in confidence playing it at the moment which results in the odd slight hesitation but it will flow more easily in time I hope.
Not quite sure whether I like the codetta but I suppose it is a scherzo and it's what he wrote.
There are a few performances on YouTube by very much better organists than I am plus one really diabolical one. There is also a harmonium rendition which is "different". Personally, I like the Fred Hohman performance best.
Yet another little piece to add to my repertoire.
The rest of the sonata is interesting most particularly the first movement which has some really decent melodies in the Piu Animato and Cantabile sections - could almost be Walton or Elgar with a bit of Percy Grainger thrown in.
