For Lent 2021 - one of a number of recordings of pieces based on the hymn tune "Auf der Tiefe rufe ich", also known in the Anglo-Saxon world as "Heinlein". Published in the OUP "Oxford Book of Lent and Easter organ music".
In form a 17th century chorale prelude - four sections based on the four lines of the hymn, with a pedal line closely following the melody. But definitely not a 17th century sound-world! This piece is based more on the German psalm-text - "out of the depths" than the English words - "Forty days and forty nights".
I've kept the registration simple - 8s and 4s on the Swell, plus the 16' Gamba to start and finish, with the Great OD2 and Principal 2 for the louder section in the middle. To bring out the Pedal line as Leighton asks I've added the 32', and drawn the 8' Principal instead of the 8' flute.
