Alan Hovhaness (1911–2000) — Sonatina for Organ, op. 382 (1983)
1) Andante
2) Allegretto pastorale
3) Adagio con molto espressione
American composer Alan Hovhaness (1911–2000) was one of one of the most prolific composers of the 20th century, producing a large catalog of works that included 67 symphonies and hundreds of other compositions in every form. Hovhaness’s unique style blended archaic Western elements (particularly those relating to his Armenian heritage) with Eastern musical cultures. He stated “My purpose is to create music, not for snobs, but for all people, music which is beautiful and healing, to attempt what old Chinese painters called spirit resonance in melody and sound.”
