Now I turn again to the wonderful cantatas of J.S.Bach and play here the intro of the great entrance chorus to "Gott der Herr ist Sonn und Schild".
This cantata was the first in which I was allowed to sing as a bass in the chamber choir - I was only 17 years old at that time ..... I think it was '79 .... (which is the same number als in BWV 79 ;-))
Here the tempo is a balancing act. After a few attempts, I settled on 118 BPM. Although the eighth-note movements are a bit "homemade", the 16-bar runs come across well differentiated. Since the choir is difficult to present with the organ, I limit myself to the very expansive intro.
The Eisenbarth organ in Friesach is very well suited for this kind of instrumentation. The horns are played by the Trompette en chamade of the 2nd manual, the strings by the Hauptwerk, coupled with some high voices of the Brustwerk. In the pedal I deliberately omit the 16" trombone and couple it with the Hauptwerk, so that the 8" trumpet plays in the bass.
