Born in St. Joseph, Missouri, Orpha Ochse (b. 1925) was educated at the at the Eastman School of Music (MM, PhD) where she studied with Harold Gleason. She held teaching positions at Central College, Western Illinois State University, Phoenix College, California Institute of Technology, and Whittier College (from which she retired in 1987). In addition to serving as organist/music director of various churches, Ochse has been active as a recitalist, composer, and researcher. Her major books include “The History of the Organ in the United States” (1978), “Organists and Organ-Playing in 19th-Century France and Belgium” (1994), and “Austin Organs” (2001). Honors include a lifetime honorary membership of the Organ Historical Society and the Eastman School of Music’s Alumni Achievement Award.
