American composer Louis Karchin (b. 1951) was born in Philadelphia and educated at the Eastman School of Music and Harvard University. His principal teachers included Samuel Adler, Joseph Schwantner, Leon Kirchner, Earl Kim, and Gunther Schuller. In 1979, he joined the faculty of New York University. Karchin has been the recipient of a large number of grants and awards, including recognitions from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Evelyn Sharp Foundation, the Alice M. Ditson Fund, the Mary Cary Flagler Trust, the Argosy Foundation, and the Aaron Copland Fund, the Fromm Foundation at Harvard University, the Barlow Endowment, and the American Academy of Arts and Letters. His music has been widely performed throughout the world and recordings appear on numerous CDs on labels including Naxos, Bridge, New World, Albany, and CRI. He has been active as a conductor of contemporary music, including as music director for the Orchestra of the League of Composers. Karchin’s catalog includes numerous works in many genres, ranging from two highly-acclaimed operas (“Romulus” and “Jane Eyre”) to numerous works for ensemble, vocal, choral, and solo performers.
