This is the original version of the work, as the young composer wrote it during his studies with the Rotterdam organ virtuoso Hendrik de Vries. Apart from a few preparatory sketches, it is the only written version by Jan Zwart.
Its manuscript has been lost, but a carefully made copy of his son Jan exists. That copy includes the complete fantasy and fugue up to the start of the reprise, most likely in accordance with the original score at the time.
In 2002 another son, Dirk Janszoon, produced an edition (still available at
http://www.dirkjanszzwart.com). He also added a second version, notated by himself, that shows how Jan Zwart played the work in later years. The contrapuntal richness of the fantasy and the close motivic connection between fantasy and fugue of the original are greatly reduced in that second version. That's why I strongly prefer the original.
One of the finest Dutch romantic organ works in my opinion.
