Praetorii Psalm, is a Christmas hymn whose text was originally written in German and then bears the title ”Es ist ein Ros entsprungen”. The song was first published in 1582 (or 1588, disputed) in Gebetbuchlein des Frater Conradus then as a 19 stanza long Catholic hymn focusing on the Virgin Mary. The melody is probably a German song from the 15th century, however, some sources indicate that it would be from the 14th century. The English version is called ”Lo, how a rose is blooming” and the most famous translation was made by Theodore Baker (1851-1934). The most recent translation is in The Oxford Book of Carols which came out in 1992.
The psalm's popularity continued during the 20th and 21st centuries; it has been recorded by such modern artists as Mannheim Steamroller, Linda Ronstadt, and Sting. (Wikipedia)
