Wat vlied' of bezwijk', getrouw is mijn God. (Hanover)

This is my 1100th upload.
Due to personal circumstances I won't go in to, this will probably also be my last one for some time, I guess.

So I chose a Dutch hymn from the hymnal of 1973, which I like a lot,, but which did not make it into the new 2013 version.

It is a combination of Dutch and English influences. A hymn of unconditional faith.

The fine tune is called Hanover, and attributed to William Croft (1708)

Dutch composer and church musician Willem Vogel wrote the two introductory preludes,

The various moods in the verses are reflected in the registrations.

Last verse harmonization by Nigel Rawthorne.

The Dutch text is:

Wat vlied of bezwijk', getrouw is mijn God,
Hij blijft aan mijn zij in 't wisselend lot;
moog 't hart soms ook beven in 't heetst van de strijd,
zijn liefd' en ontferming vertroosten altijd.

Verleid door het kwaad dat steeds mij belaagt,
gevallen in schuld, door wroeging geplaagd,
vertrouw ik slechts hem, die mij leidt door zijn Geest,
mijn zonden vergeeft en mijn smarten geneest.

Als God mij vertroost, is 't kruis niet te zwaar,
dan ken ik geen vrees in 't bangste gevaar,
dan win ik al strijdend vertrouwen en kracht
en zing ik mijn psalmen in duistere nacht.

Ik roem in mijn God, ik juich in zijn trouw,
de rots mijner ziel, waar 'k eeuwig op bouw,
Ik zal hem nog prijzen in 't uur van mijn dood,
dan rijst nog mijn loflied 'Uw goedheid is groot'.
