Franz Smetana born in 1819 from Rokltan (sic) in old Bohemia.
Looking through IMSLP I came across a publication of 6 Preludes and 6 Fugues written by students entitled 'From the composition attempts of the pupils of the Prague organist school founded by the Association of Friends of the Art for Church Music in Bohemia. Submitted by the leader of this association.' It dates from 1850.
The forward says 'The preludes and fugues printed here have all been worked on by the pupils of the 2nd year before they left the institute, and after the necessary correction in public examinations by the pupils concerned as experiments in their own invention according to the standard obtained school lessons with applause.
I can find no record of Franz Smetana as a composer or musician so maybe this is the only sample of his talents.
The better know Smetana is of course Bedřich Smetana (2 March 1824 – 12 May 1884) best known for his cycle of six orchestral tone poems, Má vlast ('My Country'), especially 'Vltava', his depiction of the river that flows through Prague. Also his Opera The Bartered Bride.
Have alook at the pireces in this collection attached below - you might find a little gem.
Some of the fugue sublects are good eg #2 with it's hint at the 'Wedge' fugue subject as maybe the students were studying Bach who was being discovered in the area at that time.
