Lobt Gott, ihr Christen, allzugleich, BuxWV 202

Over the last few days, I'll be uploading a few pieces that I'm offering as a source of "example and encouragement" to a friend looking for some possible repertoire. This is the last one of this set. :-)

Dieterich Buxtehude (c. 1637/39 – 9 May 1707) was a Danish organist and composer of the Baroque period, whose works for the organ represent a central part of the standard organ repertoire usually performed at recitals and church services.

As a composer who worked in various vocal and instrumental idioms, Buxtehude's style greatly influenced other composers, such as his student Johann Sebastian Bach. Historically, Buxtehude is among the important composers of the mid-Baroque period in Germany.

"Lobt Gott, ihr Christen allzugleich" (Praise God, all Christians equally) is a German Christmas carol with lyrics and melody by Nikolaus Herman. It is part of Protestant and Catholic hymnals, has inspired musical settings, and has been translated.

This is quite a well-known little piece. To be honest, I'd forgotten it was a Christmas hymn... ;-)

I tried to some "quaint" sounds for this, for the sake of variety and color, and hopefully, these sounds are pleasing to the listener.

I confess that I've used this piece during other seasons than Christmas - at least I think I did.

The score is attached below, as well as the only known portrait of Buxtehude, found in "A Musical Party," painted by Johannes Voorhout in 1674.

I've also included Buxtehude's signature, a picture of the Buxtehude House, and a plaque marking its significance.
