Prof. Franz Lehrndorfer (1928-2013) studied Catholic church music in Munich from 1948 to 1951 and graduated from the master class for organ there in 1952.
After graduating, Lehrndorfer worked as a music teacher with the Regensburger Domspatzen.
In 1962, he began his teaching career at the Musikhochschule in Munich, where he headed the department of Catholic church music and organ from 1969 to 1993. Lehrndorfer was also cathedral organist at Munich's Frauenkirche from 1969 until October 2002.
A special focus of his artistic activity was organ improvisation. A busy concert schedule has taken him to Germany and abroad, and many radio and recordings have been made. As an interpreter he often performed works by Johann Sebastian Bach and Max Reger. In addition to baroque music, he has also devoted himself to contemporary composers such as Oliver Messiaen.
The improvisation is taken from the documentary film "Franz Lehrndorfer - Bavarian Organ History 1984" (from minute
08:50).
