American composer and organist Dorothy Howell Sheets (1915–2011) was born in Mendham, New Jersey and was educated at the Peabody Conservatory of Music and Union Theological Seminary. She spent most of her professional life in the Muskegon, Michigan area where she served as director of music at several churches and was a member of the music faculty of Muskegon Community College for 15 years. She published various organ and choral works and several hymns tunes, the best-known of which is “Bingham” (a setting of “Morning glory, starlit sky”), which appears in a number of hymnals.
[Not to be confused with the British composer Dorothy Howell (1898–1982)]
