American composer Alan Stout (1932–2018) was born in Baltimore, Maryland and educated at Johns Hopkins University, the Peabody Conservatory, the University of Copenhagen (Denmark), and the University of Washington. His teachers included Henry Cowell, Wallingford Rieger, John Verrall, and Vagn Holmboe. In 1963, Stout joined the faculty of Northwestern University where he taught until his retirement several decades later. He composed works in numerous genres, including several major works (two symphonies and a choral passion) commissioned by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
