Hendrik de Vries (1857-1929) came from a musical family, his father and brother were also organists.
As a church organist he held posts in Amsterdam, Nijmegen and finally in the main church of Rotterdam, the Laurenskerk. There he played the largest organ in the Netherlands at that time, built around 1800 and later rebuilt and enlarged (unfortunately destroyed in the Second World War).
As a vituoso concert organist he mastered a wide repertoire, including the great works of Widor, Liszt en Reger.
He himself composed also a large number of works, most of which remained unpublished.
