Richard Popplewell was Organist and Director of Music at St. Michael's, Cornhill (1966-1979). He was preceded by Dr. Harold Darke. I had an Aunt (Ruth Fielding) in his choir who once enthused about an improvisation that built and built to a huge climax which happens to be a notable part of this evocative 'Elegy'. I can't recognise any themes by Darke but they may be cleverly hidden! I was glad to find this as it combines rich harmonies with a very British genre. Let me know your thoughts...
