Donald F. Callender (1921–2010) was born in Chicago, Illinois and spent his life and career in the state. He attended the Chicago Conservatory of Music though considered himself largely self-taught. He held positions as a church musician, though his primary focus was on composing. Callender composed his first piece for piano at age 13 and continued to write music for the rest of his life. In all, he composed more than 300 works for organ, piano, voice, recorder, among other instruments. Callender contributed numerous organ compositions to various Lorenz publications over a number of decades and his music has been performed around the world.
