ENGLISH TRANSLATION OF SELECT CHORALE VERSES:
1 Help me, God, my noble Creator,
to force these syllables into rhyme,
to the praise of your glory!
So that I may joyfully begin
to sing your Word, Lord, please empower me!
3. Jesus, the word of the Father,
came into this world
and performed great miracles.
But he was sold for a paltry price
by Judas, one of his disciples.
Jesus, the little lamb,
was sentenced to death.
7. Christ the Lord prayed in the garden,
waiting for the Jews, who cruelly bound him,
brought him before the governor,
scourged and crowned him with thorns,
and sentenced him to death.
8. Hung high on a cross,
the Prince of Heaven longed for our souls,
so he said: "I thirst!"
Hear the Man born for our salvation,
from a pure virgin.
9. With his head bowed low, he gave up his spirit,
as John writes, and he was taken down from the cross,
laid inside the tomb, and three days later,
rose from the dead just as he had promised.
10. And in the following days
Jesus sent his disciples to proclaim
his Word to all the world: saying
whoever believes and is baptized
receives the gift of eternal life,
purchased for us by our Messiah.
