Composer: Walcha, Helmuth
Sample Set: Detlef Kleuker 1978 - Notre Dame des Neiges - l'Alpe d'Huez, FR
Software: Sweelinq
Genre: Contemporary
Description:
"O Christ, our true and only Light"
This Chorale is No. 7 from Edition Peters Nr. 4871 of Helmuth Walcha - Chorale Preludes for Organ. - Book II
This instrument is absolutely perfect for Walcha's organ music. It has a majority of the stops that Walcha had at the Driekönigskirche in Frankfurt on the Schutke Organ - albeit not necessarily at the correct pitch!
The organ is amazing and was designed with the input from Jean Guillou who was Titular organist at Saint Eustache in Paris and through the brilliance of Detlef Kleuker produced an extremely versatile instrument that is unique in the Organ world, whose casework is of an open hand facing the congregation and seats under the transparent dome behind the altar in a brutalist but very unique building.

The instrument is not large but it can play pretty much everything and it has not only a Trompette en chamade but also an Hautbois en chamade!
It definitely has some aggressive "chiff" on some of the voices, but it works well in this setting-it was created during the heyday of Die Orgelbewegung (1978).
After playing many of Walcha's Chorale Preludes I have found that they all work very well on this instrument - using nearly identical stops as called for by the composer.
In this Prelude I use the Regal 16' and Prestant 4' of the Grand orgue played an octave higher. For the Récit I use the Flute octaviante 4' and Piccolo harmonique 1' and octave lower. There is no pedal-line. Because of the octave shifts - I thought that I would play it through as an audio recording until I was comfortable as the arm/hand crossovers were extreme.
One of the best features of this instrument is the full 61 note manual keyboards and 32 note pedalboard is unusual in Europe and facilitates using all of the stops in a useful but in an unconventional manner. No Super or Sub couplers available on this mechanical action instrument. The real instrument has pistons.
