Composer: Ethel Smyth
Sample Producer: Llanerch Organs
Sample Set: Blackburn Cathedral
Software: Hauptwerk VII
Genre: Romantic
Description:
At 7:59 on the YouTube video - 'Raise yourself up to your God; you troubled soul'. Text by Paul Gerhardt c.1653. Chorale melody by Friedrich Funcke? Originally 17 verses long! Verse 2 begins 'Shake your head and say, flee, you old serpent'. Quite apt for the Blackburn set! Bach used the chorale in Cantata No.2 (6th movement).

This has got to be the pinnacle of the set by Smyth. A masterful work and I do hope that listeners will be drawn to these five (6) 'short' chorale preludes. They may be downloaded from IMSLP but the new edition by David Patrick (2017 Fitzjohn Music Publications) makes things easier by replacing the C tenor clefs with G and F clefs. (Copies distributed by Banks Music Publications).
