Sonate A-Dur "Haut de la voûte céleste"

op.10 No.14

High above the firmament.
As the name suggests, this sonata deals with the approach of Christmas. The basis of this 3-part composition is an old Christmas carol from our neighbor in Luxembourg. As unspectacular as the melody is, the music swings beautifully in odd time. You can make a lot out of it.
First of all, the harmony. I wrote that this is a romantic work and I had the harmonies in mind (or rather in my ear). Bar 7 in the song movement is quite surprising, where I resolve to G sharp minor under the fifth of the dominant b in the melody, and thus reinterpret the b as a diminished third - I don't know what demon got me there ......
Well, a trio follows where the flow of the accompanying voices is characteristic.
The fugue that follows is wide - very wide - expansive, it is actually for 3 voices, but I add the pedal in the coda.
The many resting moments in the melody of the song give rise to various approaches for the counterpoint. And for the harmonies. I modulate strongly in 2 places and then move down a semitone. A flat major. Don't worry - I find my way back to A major in both places.

The pedal enters in the stretto/coda and forms a short finale. Finally, we hear the song movement with the full organ.

I had initially chosen the Mascioni organ by Azzio, but the overall sound seemed too muffled to me, and the Trombone in the pedal overrides all the other voices. Mascioni in Giubiasco has created the more suitable instrument for Christmas carols.
