Introduction et Variations JA69 (Suite)

The three movement 'Suite' won Jehan Alain first prize in the 1936 'Les Amis de l'Orgue' organ composition competition. Arranged for organ (bar 21 ff.) from a string quintet entitled 'Andante et Scherzo'. Alain added an introduction to the original Andante. The third movement 'Choral' was newly written and added for the competition entry. The Suite was dedicated to 'M.P.', Madeleine Payen, Alain's wife to be.
There are many manuscript sources for the work and I received the gift of Marie-Claire Alain's book 'Critical Notes on the organ works of Jehan Alain' from my wife as a Christmas present. This has been invaluable in deciding upon registrations, tempi and phrasing etc. The youtube recording of the string quartet was also very informative.
I recorded this movement using the 1971 Leduc edition and will add the other two movements here once I have managed to learn them!
