Scheidemann was a German composer and organist. He studied with Sweelinck in Amsterdam and became organist of the Katharinenkirche in Hamburg. He is considered as one of the first composers of the North German organ school.
Although Heinrich Scheidemann is mentioned as composer in the title, according to musicologist Pieter Dirksen the authenticity of this fugue is doubtful. So it could be written by a contemporary of Scheidemann. Nevertheless, a fine fugue with some virtuoso parts in it.
