American composer Wallace McClain Cheatham (1945–2021) was born in Cleveland, Tennessee. He was educated at Knoxville College, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and Columbia Pacific University. From 1968 to his retirement in 2003, Cheatham taught in Wisconsin public schools (primarily the Milwaukee district). Cheatham was very active as a composer, fulfilling numerous commissions and receiving performances of his works worldwide. His music was published by Shawnee Press, Alfred, Master-Player Library, Oxford University Press, Southern Illinois University Press, and Jomar Press. Cheatham’s book “Dialogues on Opera & the African American Experience” has been translated into numerous languages.
