| Description: | Gerald Hendrie, was born in Westcliff-on-Sea, Essex, England. Among his teachers were Harold Darke, William Harris, Herbert Howells and André Marchal.
Although he is primarily known now for his contribution to British liturgical choral music, he conceived and composed an organ work collection “Le Tombeau de Marcel Dupré” (which consists of Toccata & Fugue, Prelude & Fugue, Prelude & Fugue on the name BACH, Two Sketches on the name BACH, published individually) between 1990-92. The Toccata and Fugue is dedicated to the late British organist, John Scott. The Toccata certainly gets its inspiration from Dupré’s Prelude in B Major. The Fugue perhaps relates to the rhythmic intensity of Dupré’s Fugue in G Minor. However, Hendrie’s rhythms are decidedly more jazzy, evocative of South American dance music. Both Toccata and Fugue paraphrase the three chord ending found in the Fugue in G Minor.
Unfortunately, all of these works are now out of print. |
