Alain studied Harmony and Fugue under Georges Caussade during the years 1930 - 1933. He struggled to bring his free spirit into line with traditional composition techniques. For the January 1932 examination, Alain presented his Variation sur l’hymne ‘Lucis Creator’.
After this exam, Alain’s music history teacher
Maurice Emmanuel wrote to Canon Henri Tissot.
‘At the examination in fugue, I saw a fine assignment done by Alain: choral variations for organ, skilfully written. His fugal exposition, written in isolation, was not yet perfect, and the grade he received was consequently low. But this is of no importance, and I believe this young musician to be quite talented.’
