Description: | Johann Philipp Kirnberger (also Kernberg , 24 April 1721, Saalfeld – 27 July 1783, Berlin ) was a musician, composer (especially of fugues ) and music theorist.
A pupil of Johann Sebastian Bach , he was appointed violinist at the court of Frederick II the Great in 1751. He was music tutor to Princess Anna Amalia of Prussia from 1758 until her death.
Kirnberger greatly admired J. S. Bach, and was instrumental in ensuring that all of the master's choral arrangements were published .
These appeared after Kirnberger's death. Many of Bach's autographs are preserved in Kirnberger's library.
He is best remembered for his theoretical work Die Kunst des reinen Satzes in der Musik ("The Art of Strict Composition in Music", 1774–79). The technical well-tempered albums known as "Kirnberger II" and "Kirnberger III" are associated by name ( Kirnberger Temperament ) with a rational version of equal temperament
I know the 8' Octav is preferred in the bass-line of trios, but with the 16' included this piece sounded a lot better (IMHO). |
