Andante AWV 65-2a is a transcription by Alain of the second movement, ‘Adagio molto rubato’ from his triptych ‘Suite monodique pour piano’. This movement was published by Universal Edition in 1980 as the third piece in ‘Jehan Alain - Quatre Œuvres pour Orgue’. Marguerite Evain was the dedicatee of the piano work and also sponsored the works’ publication by Hérelle in 1938. Alain gave some advice as to the performance of the piano Adagio: In the Adagio, the succession of beats is carried out with a constantly mobile pace… Generally the line above the note indicates more a slight prolonging of the duration of the note than a leaning on the note’. These ‘tenuto’ marks are numerous in the pedal part of the organ version. The given registration is - ‘Récit: Dulciane 8 et 4, Positif: Flute 4, Octavin. Pédale: tir. Pos./Péd.’. I am using the Blackburn Great Rohrflöte 4’ and Blockflöte 2’ with the Swell Viola da Gamba 8’ and Swell Octave adding the Gt. Stopped Diapason 8’ for the central section.
