Arnolt Schlick the Elder (c. 1460-1521) played “many years before emperors and kings, spiritual and secular princes and other lords", according to his son in the preface to the 'Tabulaturen etlicher Lobgesang und lidlein' (1512). He lived in Heidelberg, was blind from a young age and was one of the most important composers and organists of the early Renaissance. He made a name for himself as an organ expert and had already taken part in the Imperial Diet in Worms in 1495 at a young age as a representative of the organist profession. His ideal organ consisted of main organ, positive and pedal, 15-20 stops on an 8' base. His music avoids excessive flourishes and ornamentation and uses the cantus firmus with long tone durations, below which imitative musical fragments are set in a row. His chorale arrangement 'Maria zart' from the 'Tablatures' is an important piece of Marian organ music which illustrates this musical approach perfectly.
