Boëly (1785-1858) was appointed organist of St-Germain-l'Auxerrois in Paris (near the Louvre) in 1840, at the age of 55. "14 Preludes on Denizot's Carols" were composed in 1846 : 14 short pieces, each one quoting the Carol's melody which is enclosed in a refined counterpoint.
Acquainted with Bach's music, at a time when it was almost unknown, Boëly seems to have been inspired by some of the techniques used in Orgelbüchlein : motivic counterpoint (No. 1, 4, 5, 13, 14), canonical imitations (No 2, 3, 7, 10), double canon (No. 3), chromatic counterpoint (No. 11)...
