Johann Philipp Kirnberger was born on April 24, 1721 in Saalfeld/Saale. He received violin and piano lessons from an early age, followed by general musical training with Johann Peter Kellner and Bach's pupil Heinrich Nikolaus Gerber. From 1741-51, he worked in various positions as a harpsichordist, bandmaster and music teacher in Poland, after which he returned to Germany to take violin lessons, followed by a position as a violinist in the Prussian court orchestra in Potsdam.
