Description: | Johann Peter Kellner 1705-1772
Was Gott tut das ist wohl getan
Canto fermo in Soprano
a 2 Clav. et Pedal
Kellner writes a wonderfully floating prelude to this very popular melody. The accompaniment is slightly a "concert de flutes" while the cantus firmes stands out clearly and with light ornamentation.
There is a widespread opinion that Kellner was also a pupil of Johann Sebastian Bach, but this was never claimed by him and has not yet been supported by sources. From 1725 to 1727, Kellner was a school servant and organist in Frankenhain, and from 1727 until his death he was a school servant, cantor and organist at the church of St. Laurentius in his home village of Gräfenroda. He enjoyed a considerable reputation as an organist and teacher, which earned him a large number of pupils, the most famous of whom was probably Johann Philipp Kirnberger. Other pupils included Johannes Ringk, the author of BWV 565 and later organist at St. Mary's in Berlin. Johann Peter Kellner mainly wrote for piano and organ. In addition, a large number of cantatas have survived, although it is not always possible to distinguish them from those of his son Johann Christoph.
Played on the Organ Art Media sample set of the Dreifaltigkeits Organ, Ottobeuren.
