Month two of recording Franck & this upload is the first of the Trois Pieces. These were premiered on October 1st, 1878 at the opening of the 4 manual Cavaillé-Coll organ of the Trocadero.
Because of this, I have opted for the Caen sample set. I had originally thought of Nancy, but although it is a really splendid & thrilling instrument it does have some weaknesses, most particularly the Positif. Caen gives a broader palette than St Omer, especially in the pedal &, with a completion date of 1882, does reflect better the ethos of Cavaille-Coll organs of the time that Franck wrote the pieces.
I remain by this comment which has become my mantra (or excuse if you don’t like my performance!):
“My feeling with Franck is that it’s a lifelong journey and when you record or perform it, it is a snap shot of where on that journey you are.”
