Description: | Dieterich Buxtehude (c. 1637/39 – 9 May 1707) was a Danish organist and composer of the Baroque period, whose works for the organ represent a central part of the standard organ repertoire usually performed at recitals and church services.
As a composer who worked in various vocal and instrumental idioms, Buxtehude's style greatly influenced other composers, such as his student Johann Sebastian Bach. Historically, Buxtehude is among the important composers of the mid-Baroque period in Germany.
He was appointed organist of the Marienkirche in Lübeck in 1668, and it was here that he accomplished his major works and influence.
The "Praeludium in F-sharp Minor" is one of Buxtehude's most famous works. It is multi-sectional, fiery and rhapsodic.
We know that the historically accurate temperament is the meantone, but it is very harsh in this key. It seems to me that the ideal "goal" of meantone is "tension and release," but in this case, there is no release, and the closing chords are very strident, at least to our ears.
I wanted a bigger acoustic and chose the Kampen organ, which is not in meantone, and more "settled" to our ears. I hope listeners will approve of my selection.
The score is attached below, as well as the only known portrait of Buxtehude, found in "A Musical Party," painted by Johannes Voorhout in 1674.
I've also included Buxtehude's signature, a picture of the Buxtehude House, a plaque marking its significance, and a grand overhead view of the impressive Marienkirche. |
