Continuing on the journey of music written for keyboard instruments in general, I now propose some settings of “In Nomine” by various composers on various small instruments.
Many of the early English composers wrote (sometimes several) versions of this. It appears that John Taverner (1490-1545) wrote a mass for six voices on the “Gloria tibi Trinitas,” and in the Benedictus section specifically, “in nomine Domini” was reduced to four voices. This literally became the most popular thing ever at the time in England, and composers returned to this over and over again for inspiration.
