Description:
The 21th composition from manuscript Becker III.8.63 is a fugue in a minor. With the possible exception of the Prelude in C, L 16a and the Fugue in C, L 16b, manuscript Becker III.8.63 does not indicate that any of the numerous preludes and fugues contained in it, should be considered as a pair. Perhaps one should treat some of the prelude and fugues that follow one another in the masnuscript as a pair. Besides the Prelude and fugua L 16a and L 16b I already mentiond, the Prelude in D, L 3 and the Fugue in D. L 4. L 3 and L 4 could be considered as a pair and the Prelude in C, L 6 together with the Fugue in C, L 7 as well. And even though the fugue I publish here has another tonality than the Prelude in C major, L 20, that preceeds it in the manuscript, these two could equally well be considered a pairl. The fugue shows in the interludes (mainly in the bass voice) the same motif that is the main building block of the preceding prelude, creating motivic unity between the two compositions. So, I think they fit well together and could be played as a traditional "Prelude and Fugue".
