SMITH, William Farley. b. Durham, North Carolina, 23 April 1941; d. Englewood, New Jersey; 18 March 1997. William Farley Smith was a United Methodist musician, composer, arranger of African American spirituals, and educator. He received degrees from the Manhattan School of Music (B.M., 1963, M.M., 1964) and Columbia University (Ed.M., 1982; Ed.D., 1984). For over two decades, he taught in the New York City public schools, the Performing Arts High School (Newark, New Jersey), and concurrently at Montclair State College (New Jersey). Beginning in 1990, Smith was dually appointed to Drew University and the Drew University School of Theology as Professor of Music and Professor of Worship… His work is represented by a number of works of spiritual arrangements in hymnals across all denominations, most notably adapting and arranging each spiritual (over 40) in “The United Methodist Hymnal” (1989).
