| Description: | On November 17th, 2025 two organ works were attributed to Johann Sebastian Bach by Peter Wollny and Ton Koopman and premiered by Ton Koopman on the Bach organ of Leipzig. Both organ works are chaconnes, which remained anonymous in the original manuscript, but were attributed to Johann Christian Graff in the past. I notice that on different platforms there are discussions if the attributions by Wollny and Koopman are right or not. I am not a musicologist, so it doesn't make sense to claim these pieces are composed by Bach or not. Especially because of the good reputation of Peter Wollny as a musicologist. But to be honest, I never suspected that these pieces are from Bach, even if it was a young Bach.
When the Ciacona in D minor (BWV 1178) was still attributed to Johann Christian Graff, I played this piece a lot. But I never took the time to make a proper recording. So I decided to record this piece today. Since 2024 this piece was available for free on IMSLP in a fine edition by Christian Hesse (see link under the description). Bach or not; I like this work and it is fun to play. Especially on the Poblet model, which gives so many possibilities for different registrations for a chaconne like this. |
