Johann Georg Herzog (1822 – 1909) was an important German (specifically, southern German) organist and composer. He was strongly influenced by the works of J.S. Bach and Felix Mendelssohn.
He composed an important body of works, including a huge number of organ works. His Opus 62 contains seven sonatas for organ, dedicated to the dedicated to various feasts in the church year.
The first sonata in the collection is the "Advents-Sonate" (Advent Sonata), which features the chorale melody "Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland", the Tonus Peregrinus (a psalm tone), and the German Magnificat melody.
The first movement of the Advent Sonata, marked "Moderato", begins with a short introduction. The movement then develops the theme of "Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland" in a well-developed contrapuntal texture.
