Johann Georg Herzog (1822 – 1909) was an important German (specifically, southern German) organist and composer. He was strongly influenced by the works of J.S. Bach and Felix Mendelssohn.
He composed an important body of works, including a huge number of organ works. His Opus 62 contains seven sonatas for organ, dedicated to the dedicated to various feasts in the church year.
The first sonata in the collection is the "Advents-Sonate" (Advent Sonata), which features the chorale melody "Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland", the Tonus Peregrinus (a psalm tone), and the German Magnificat melody.
The second movement of the Advent Sonata, is a calm Andante Pastorale. Well-known from barock christmas music find their place in this calm movement.
