| Description: | Well - here is a belated Christmas/New Years present for you all in 2 parts! My favourite organ work by J S Bach - the monumental Prelude and Fugue in E Flat BWV 552, acts as a bookends to Bach's great Clavierubung III (German Organ Mass)
It is considered, and I agree, that the piece is an exposition of the Trinity, the key of three flats, which forms the shape of a triangle (the theological diagram expounding the Trinity) on the score no less, three different themes, expertly interwoven, in the styles of three different European countries, and all in all, immensly thrilling and majestic.
The first section, is a French overture with dotted rhythms and powerfull chords, which carry us along to a Gallant style section in which the Organo Pleno holds discourse with the soft flutes of the organ in quasi pizzicato, and majestic flourishes, answered by hushed whispers. A return to the majestic overture-this time in C minor is marked by flourishes and scales, and then the theme gives way to a torrent of rushing sixteenth notes, in a German double fugue which flicker like tounges of fire, before dying away to silence. The overture theme then comes back with a vengeance in the subdominant, and a lengthy trill on a high E flat seems to propell the music heavenwards - and to a return to the Gallant theme....
