Ethel Smyth (1858–1944), a British composer, conductor, writer, and leading activist in the early women’s rights movement, composed her “Short Choral Preludes” in 1884 while studying in Leipzig. She had forced her way into this education against her father’s will by going on a hunger strike. The Choral Prelude and Canon “O Gott du frommer Gott” (Oh God, you righteous god) are characterized by complex chromaticism and counterpoint, with the canon revealing her engagement with the Baroque. Her extensive musical oeuvre is being rediscovered today.
In everything she did, she was an extraordinary power woman who, despite the strict social conventions of her time, remained open to her own passion for women. 0:00 Choral prelude 2:44 Canon
