Claussnitzer used the original rhythmic version of this seventeenth century melody for his chorale prelude, as he explicitly stated. In those days (1914) in Germany, after several centuries of iso-rhythmic congregational singing practice, a discussion had started about restoring the melodies to their original form. This was practiced in some congregations and hymnals were published with corresponding musical notations. We also find a reflection of this in a number of chorale preludes in Reger's opus 135a (1915).
