| Description: | Olivier Messiaen (1908–1992) — Apparition de l’Église éternelle
I dedicate this final work to David (Agnus_Dei), long-time Contrebombarde contributor and fellow Fulbright Scholar. May the message of this series, from grief to transcendence, be received as an offering of deep gratitude for your artistry, and as a small reflection of the profound light you continue to bring to this community.
This recording forms the final chapter of my organ series The Eternal Sigh: An Exploration of Grief, Suffering, Loss, and Hope, which traces a dramatic arc across centuries of organ literature:
Lament → Struggle → Resignation → Catastrophe → Bewilderment → Transcendence
After the inward grief of Frescobaldi, the turbulent struggle of Bruhns, the quiet resignation of Brahms, and the civilizational catastrophe and existential aftermath of Tariverdiev’s Chernobyl Symphony, the narrative now extends beyond both the individual and humanity itself.
In this final stage, the perspective expands to its broadest scale.
Transcendence does not resolve the questions raised earlier in the journey. The search for cause and the question of direction are not answered in a conventional sense. Instead, they are placed within a framework in which they no longer function as primary concerns.
What began as a personal lament and later emerged as a collective cry is now situated within a reality that exceeds both.
Transcendence, in this context, is not an explanation but a realignment of perspective. |
