The "finale" of Hielscher's Variations on Frère Jacques.
This is a beautiful selection of different character pieces, great to showcase an organ. Hielscher, who was one of the pioneers of popularizing French organs in Germany, played it first as an improvisation on one of his organ tours to France and later edited the scores.
I thought the piece also works beautifully on the Eule of Mercator Hall, not least because of the absolute clarity of its sound and beautiful reeds. At the beginning, I use the Vox Strigis (cry of the owl) as a wakeup call.
Hope I will be able to record more of the variations, but for the time being I need to work on this one. It will be my postlude for a service for kids on Easter Sunday. As always, please bear with my mistakes. I am not a pro.
